You just had to be there!

Another stop on our cruise was the ancient city of Pompeii, unearthed from under the ash that covered the site for many years. The area was inhabited from as early as 6th century BC.

Pompeii became a colony of Rome in 80 BC and was enhanced by subsequent emperors of Rome until in 62 AD a violent earthquake reduced much of Pompeii to rubble. It took over 17 years to rebuild and was still a building site when Mount Vesuvius erupted on 24th August 79 AD, when it was buried under rock and ash. Today the site has undergone massive excavation and restoration and is truly a sight of archeological interest. Tarzan and I walked along way that day and found ourselves thinking what must it really have been like to alive way back then! Hummmmm…… maybe not so great, unless you came from a wealthy family.
